Two ships pass silently in the night at the SCARE for a CURE Volunteer Kickoff, unaware of what the future holds for both of them.

Nikki makes first contact with Jake, through a series of frustrating SCARE website emails as they try to decide if the other is as obnoxious as they think. Nikki thinks Jake is pretentious and Jake thinks Nikki is a bossy upstart. Little do they know.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 2013.9.15

The first day Nikki and Jake meet face to face and become fast friends (partly because they were unaware at first who the other was (see: frustrating emails)). Shortly after, Nikki steals Jake’s wood and is far better with it than he is (with many lesbian jokes). The two quickly become good pals.

After a long final night of SCARE, Nikki attempts to head home. And fails. After her car gets stuck on the train tracks, Jake along with Jarrett and many of their friends, lift the car straight off the tracks using nothing but superhero will power (and lots of hands). Jake often says this was a defining moment in their friendship.

Nikki joins Jake and friends at the Texas Renaissance Faire and sees Jake with a different eye for the first time. He looks rather dashing in his black leather knight outfit.

Nikki and Jake stay up watching Star Trek together and making fun of Kirk and Spock. Jake is blissfully unaware of Nikki’s attempts at awkward flirting.

Jake adopts a puppy and names her Athena. Nikki immediately takes it upon herself to teach her the ways of life (“she takes after me!”).

Nikki attempts more flirting by publicly calling Jake out on Facebook and calling him a bastard. He simply accepts it and continues to be blind to Nikki’s feminine wiles.

Jake and Nikki attend a choir concert in a church and the world ends. Not really, but they do swear a lot and Nikki takes pictures implicating Jake of being inattentive. There are also lots of inappropriate jokes about the “Filleth thy heavens with thy glory” and such.

Jake and Nikki celebrate a very belated Christmas party with friends. Nikki claims him as her Christmas Jew. Shortly after the party, Nikki’s mom asks Nikki if she and Jake are dating. Nikki adamantly says no, being that he’s her good friend and that could never ever possibly happen. Yes.

Nikki passes out at SCARE due to dehydration. Jake takes care of her. Nikki has no memory of this. Typical.

Nikki and Jake and friends have crappy cosplay for Guardians of the Galaxy. Jake is Star-Lord, Nikki is Rocket. A match made in heaven.

Jake and Athena comes to visit Nikki while she’s sick with the plague. They talk for hours, Jake making her laugh a lot and feel better for the first time in weeks. At the end of the night, Nikki realizes (with a little bit of panic) that she is completely and totally head over heels for him. She’s in love. She freaks out and makes Jake leave.

Nikki finally admits out loud to someone else how completely in love she is with Jake. Kate is not surprised.

Nikki and Jake go on their first “date” though Jake is completely unaware of this. Kate helps Nikki dress up for him. Nikki is a panicked mess. Jake thinks Nikki looks great but is still completely oblivious to her advances. Despite how desperate she is to make sure they sit together.

After a long Halloween night, Nikki completely loses her mind and tells Jake how she feels. He is surprised. But also happy. They kiss in the middle of SCARE’s last night and then spend the rest of the run meeting in secret spots between groups and hiding their sudden infatuation with each other from their friends (rather poorly). It’s the best Halloween ever.

Curled up in bed together, talking about how much they love each other, and how excited they are for a future together, Jake takes Nikki’s face in his hands and asks her, with tears in his eyes, if she’ll marry him. Nikki bursts into tears and finally says Yes. There’s lots of crying.
